Canned Light

The Avenue du Parc illumination project, Lumière en conserve, brings a festive atmosphere back to the neighbourhood in an original way.

The mason jar, patented in 1858, is used more than ever in millions of homes across Canada and the United States. It has become an icon of rural and urban craftsmanship. It evokes our ability to transform our daily lives according to our very own personal recipe; an object that fits well with the Mile-End neighborhood in Montreal.

The illumination project deploys 2,000 mason jars transformed into light fixtures along Avenue du Parc. Equipped with a photoluminescent cell and a rechargeable battery, this fixture becomes a sustainable installation that requires no wiring or power source! Illumination lasting 4 to 6 hours a day.

Lumière en conserve revitalized Avenue du Parc for the spring and summer of 2015. The covered area spans a length of 1.2 kilometers.

The Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture took up the idea and deployed 5,000 customized solar jars across a neighborhood in Seoul in 2018.
